EDITOR RAPES CO-WORKER IN HOTEL LIFT

An Indian court Thursday charged the former editor of a renowned news magazine with the crime of raping a female colleague four years ago.

The public prosecutor Francisco Taviera told reporters outside the court in the western state of Goa, the alleged rapist, Tarun Tejpal pleaded not guilty to the charges of rape, sexual harassment and wrongful restraint.

“The charges have been framed against Tarun Tejpal and he has pleaded not guilty to such rape charges,” Taviera said.

The 54-year-old founder and former editor of Tehelka magazine, Tejpal was accused of raping a female journalist in the lift of the five-star hotel in Goa in November 2013.

In 2014 he was granted a bail.

The report of this rape incidence got o the spotlight, following the gang-rape of a student in Delhi in December 2012 which went about like wild fire, alongside its protests which gave room to strengthening of the anti-rape laws.

The Tehelka magazine reports forcefully on the issues of gender inequality in India. It was highlighted that police and judicial insensitivity in India has given rise to such deadly incidence.

The raped lady who has long quit the magazine is unnamed for legal reasons.

According to a Press Trust of India news agency report, the trial in this long-delayed case will start in November 21, 2017.

Tejpal has constantly shorn of the allegations and yet suggested that the ruling Bharatiya Janata party was orchestrating the case to punish him for the magazines critical coverage.
