It is obviously seen in the islamic religion that the muslims do not go side- by- side with the Gregorian Calendar used by the world at large. The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354/355 days, which has 29 or 30 days in a month depending on when a new moon is sighted, It is used (alongside the Gregorian calendar) to date events in many Muslim countries.

Muslims around the world follow the Islamic Calendar which is dated back to AD 622. The Hijri came to existence during that year when Prophet Mohammad(Peace be upon Him) and his followers migrated from Mecca to Medina which was known as (Yathrib) back then. Hijri is derived from Arabic word Hijrah, which means migration. In the religious context, it specifically refers to the migration of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him)since over 14 centuries ago.

It is also used by Muslims to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual period of fasting and the proper time for the pilgrimage at Mecca. Official sighting of Islamic events are always based on the moon, which means that the official announcement of the New Year has been subjected to the sighting of the moon.

"To the muslims it is important to always evaluate the reasons behind Hijri, as a new Hijri year begins, ‘why did Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions migrate leaving everything behind; their homes, their property, and their loved ones?’

“This is because of the act of sacrificing worldly gains and comforts for the perseverance of the Islamic religion which was then in danger at Mecca. This message should
inspire us to follow the Islamic teachings; honesty in trading and other traits, above all.”

On Tuesday, the Deputy Minister for Presidential Affairs, and Chairman of the Board of trustees at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, Ahmed Juma Al Za'abi, said in a press conference that the unified Hijra calendar was based on Shariah and astronomical principles

However, according to the calendar, today marks the first day of Muharram 1439, September 21, 2017
